FOOD AWARENESS-2: CDC ALERT – CAMPYLOBACTER ON THE RISE

CAMPYLOBACTER FOOD AWARENESS:

PROBLEM: The Campylobacter bacteria that causes Human Gastroenteritis is on the Rise! The CDC stated that the incidence of a bacterial infection with CAMPYLOBACTER is on the rise, and has increased 13% since 2008.

-

HOW: People become infected by eating something contaminated with this bacteria (especially from eating undercooked CHICKEN, and non-pasteurized milk).

-

WHY: Campylobacter lives in feces. Experts believe among other issues that HOUSE FLIES are passing the bacteria to our chicken populations. (recall flies breed in animal manure, garbage, and decaying animals)

-

SICKNESS: Campylobacter Human infection patient symptoms are headache, and body aches, crampy abdominal pain, fever as high as 40°C, and as many as 10 watery, frequently bloody, bowel movements per day.

-

PREVENTION: The following will help you avoid infection

1. Fully cook your chicken before eating

2. Only drink pasteurized milk

3. Don’t drink contaminated water

4. Wash your hands while preparing food, and before eating

-

PERSONAL NOTE: while I was backpacking in Europe, I ate undercooked chicken nuggets at a street stand in Camden-London England…I was infected by Campylobacter for a week…It felt like being stabbed in the gut…you don’t want it!!!…Definitely remember to only eat fully cooked chicken…and heck there is no direct proof, but I would not let any flies land on my food after reading this!
